<text>The deposition of Jonathan Lamon of Middleton in the County of Essex & CommonWealth of Massachusetts Bay Gentleman of Lawful age who Testifies & declares that on about the sixteenth day of August Last, I being at the house which formerly belonged to John Wilkins Late of said Middleton gentleman deceas’d, and where John Peters of said Middleton Husbandman now lives, on some busness with him the said Peters, and after some conversation with him, he Broke out into a violent Passion with or about Dinah Cuber, a negro servant to the widow Naomi Wilkins widow of the aforesaid John Wilkins Deceas’d, and being at a Distance from the house he the said Peters took up a Clubb in his hand and run[n]ing into the house saying sayd that he would sacrifice her the said Dinah, and after tarrying in the house a few minnets came out again, and sometime after, on the same day the said Peters being at the house of me the diponent, said in my hearing and in the hearing of several other Persons, that he believed if he had found her the said Dinah he should have kill’d her; and on the evening of ye same day the said Naomi Wilkins sent for me (as she was then from home at the house of Capt. Benjamin Gardners) and desired me to undertake for her relief, and try trie if there could be anyway found out for her releif for she would not go home to live with him the said Peters again unless Dinnah could go home & live with her, for she was afraid of her life for he had threatned Dinnah’s life, and her life would go next. [A]fter which I went to him the said Peters, and told him that I would warrant that if he would go & see Mrs Wilkins that she would come to a settlement with him but he answered that he would not go near her, for he was not going to make any Indian Peace, nor Childrens bargains, and that he had made a settlement with her already and on the same day at my house I heard the said John Peters say that the said Naomi Wilkins was grown old and Childish and was easily flattered away, and as I was coming from Newbury court, I heard the said Peters Say that he would drive the dispute as far as he could ‘till he had spent all his own Intrest and all the Estate, before he would be truckled out of his right, for he had rather the Lawyers should have than it they. Some [?] time in the beginning of the dispute Several of the Creditors & bondsmen to the Estate of the said John Wilkins, & his bondsmen, were together to consult what they could do to secure themselves. [T]hey advised Maj. Ezra Putnam to Take up in the affair, but he refused at that time, and to told me he would give me, or any other person one hundred dollars if they would not insist on his being concern’d in the affair and say no more to him about it. [B]ut some time after, by the urgency of me the deponent, & some other persons, he was Prevailed with and undertook for her. [A]nd I have Divers times since the dispute heard him the said John Peters say that the Personal Estate of the said John Wi[l]kins diseas’d was all his — and when the above said Ezra Putnam, in Company with me the deponant, and others Looking after the cattle, I heard him the said John Peters forwarn the said Putnam of touching the cattle or ever Coming on upon the Land again [Verso:] upon the Peril of his life – we being then on the land in dispute Looking after the cattle which belonged to the widow Naomi Wilkins — after the time of the said Putnam had be taken a power to act for the said widow, and had read the Power to the said Peters -– and further the deponant saith not[signature, Jonathan Lamon]
